抖M女仆 has awarded Leon Charney an honorary doctorate in humane letters in recognition of his lifelong commitment to peace through diplomacy.

Charney is a prominent lawyer, author and broadcaster, as well as a former advisor to notable statesmen including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Israeli President Ezer Weizman.聽

鈥淟eon Charney shows unequivocally that one person can make a huge difference in the world,鈥 said 抖M女仆 President John Kelly. 鈥湺禡女仆 is privileged to shine a light on this unsung champion of peace.鈥

Kelly praised Charney鈥檚 work with Carter and Weizman, which ultimately led to the Camp David Peace Agreement between Israel and Egypt in 1978. At that time, President Carter called Charney 鈥渢he unsung hero鈥 of that turning point in history, for it was the first time that peace was made between a Jewish nation and an Arab country because of Charney鈥檚 diplomatic efforts.

鈥淟eon Charney鈥檚 dedication to peace among nations not only merits our sincere appreciation, but also serves as a source of inspiration for the aspiring diplomats that are trained through the 抖M女仆 Diplomacy Program,鈥 said Jeffery Morton, Ph.D., professor of diplomacy within 抖M女仆鈥檚 Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.聽鈥淲e are forever indebted to Leon Charney.鈥

Maria Sachs; 抖M女仆 Provost Gary Perry; Dr. Malcolm Dorman, member of 抖M女仆鈥檚 Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine advisory board; and Heather Coltman, DMA, dean of 抖M女仆鈥檚 Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

聽For more than 25 years, Charney has moderated 鈥淭he Leon Charney Report,鈥 an award winning nationally televised program. He is also the author of five books, including 鈥淏ackdoor Channels 鈥 The Price of Peace,鈥漺hich was made into an Emmy Award-winning documentary video.
