Just in time for Valentine鈥檚 Day and American Heart Month, 鈥檚 has received initial accreditation from the national Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education () for its first University-sponsored fellowship. The 抖M女仆 Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship will be based at Tenet HealthCare system鈥檚 (DMC), a member of the 抖M女仆 College of Medicine Graduate Medical Education (GME) .

This new 抖M女仆 Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship is a subspecialty of internal medicine and will complement the existing residency programs at 抖M女仆: internal medicine (launched in 2014); general surgery (launched in 2016); emergency medicine (launched in 2017); psychiatry (launches in July); and neurology (launches in July). The fellowship launches in July, and the three-year program will include two fellows per year for a total of six fellows.

, M.D., the regional medical director of Interventional Cardiology and Transcatheter Therapy at DMC and a professor in 抖M女仆鈥檚 , is the director of the new fellowship program. , M.D., 抖M女仆鈥檚 program director, and an associate professor of Integrated Medical Science in 抖M女仆鈥檚 Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, is responsible for providing supervision and guidance to ensure compliance with accreditation standards.

Schmidt College of Medicine. 鈥淗eart disease remains the number one cause of death in the United States, and approximately 92 million American adults are living with some form of cardiovascular disease or the after-effects of stroke. Training the next generation of cardiologists is critical to addressing the immense and growing need for this specialty both locally and nationally.鈥

Cardiology fellows will have the opportunity to train alongside top physicians and other clinicians in the field. The program will include rotations in DMC鈥檚 high tech cardiac intensive care unit and cardiac care step-down units, the cardiac catheterization lab and the electrophysiology lab. In addition, fellows will be able to train in DMC鈥檚 new , which provides state-of-the-art advanced technology for various procedures including angioplasty and stenting and endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.

DMC is a 535-bed acute care community hospital and a Level I Trauma Center serving communities in south Palm Beach County. The hospital has achieved recognition from Florida Blue as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care. 抖M女仆鈥檚 GME programs are spearheaded by , M.D., Ph.D., senior associate dean for graduate medical education and academic affairs. He also serves as the designated institutional official responsible for all residency and fellowship programs sponsored by 抖M女仆鈥檚 College of Medicine as well as the recruitment of founding program directors for planned GME programs.
